Care for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Patients
Encourage your patient to rest
After diagnosis and treatment, a patient is supposed to rest in order to allow his heart to heal. However, rest includes both sleeping and avoidance of any strenuous activities.
Encourage him/her to keep calm
HCM is fatal; and a patient with HCM may panic a lot after diagnosis and maybe lose hope. To reduce such fear or stress; which may result, it’s important to be with such a patient; as well as encourage him/her by giving them hope and showing them love.
Encourage him/her to follow the instructions of the heath provider
Moreover, a HCM patient taking several different medications if there are underlying conditions or causes. You need to help and encourage such human being to be taking the required medication daily.
Also, encourage him/her to honor any medical appointments and to go for further checkup. Simply because the checkups can help the doctor decide if your he/she needs to change medication; and also might detect any other related conditions early.
Help your patient avoid any future heart problems; which may prevail
Furthermore, normally heart conditions may degenerate to other complicated heart diseases. HCM could be a result of hypertension. By letting him/her understand this he/she will see the need to change his/her such as smoking, high blood pressure, cholesterol foods intake, physical inactivity and alcohol.
Help the patient observe the recommended diet
However, this includes the help in preparing the food and encouraging the patient to take on food; which are recommended and avoid other food prohibited no matter how much he/she misses or loves them. E.g. if the consumption of alcohol or salt is prohibited, help him/her understand the dangers of ignoring such directions and taking the foods.
Incase of surgery or any other incision,
You need to help him/her with the cleaning and changing of bandages. Meanwhile, incase of drainage or oozing from the incision; clean and help him/her ; consider it normal and not to panic.
Help him/her with personal activities such as walking to the bathroom, covering him/her with warm clothing during sleep etc.
Also you need to help other patient gain courage and continue with normal life by setting a good example. For instance if you consume alcohol or smoke cigarettes and you are caring for a patient who has been prohibited for such foodstuffs, you need to set an example by also quitting the same or do not use them when you are around such a patient.
Play together, listen to favorite music, watch a movie together, read religious and inspirational materials, pray, go for a walk etc.
